#130 - Neil Young vs Spotify | Microgenres: Hypnagogic Pop | Hargus "Pig” Robbins
Last week we briefly discussed Neil Young’s decision to remove his music from Spotify and Greg predicted it was going to grow into something bigger. He was right & we dive back into it. Other artists have joined Young, including Joni Mitchell, India Arie, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash & Nils Lofgren. Podcasts such as “Science Vs”, exclusively on Spotify, as well as prominent hosts Brené Brown & Roxanne Gay have also joined the movement (most after we recorded the show). Joe Rogan, host of the Joe Rogan Experience & the target of Young’s ire for his choice in anti-vaccine guests, released a 10min video apology on Instagram…but it doesn’t seem to be slowing down the trend. We discuss whether we agree with the purpose of the movement and where things may go from here.

Nick’s eldest son (and past guest) Ciri introduced him to the artist Jack Stauber on a road trip this past weekend. The artist has been counted a member of the microgenre “hypnagogic pop”, alongside a disparate number of other artists that borrow heavily from past 70s & 80s genres. ‘H-pop’, as it’s also called, has been summarily denounced by the vast majority of these artists & it seemed like a perfect opportunity to bring up our new recurring theme “Old vs New Music”.

Jay is sad to report the loss of another titan in music. Legendary session keyboard player Hargus “Pig” Robbins, a member of "The Nashville A-Team" continued playing until shortly before his passing last week at the age of 84. We listen to a few of his most notable contributions, but we barely scratch the surface of an endless impressive 65 year career. The man was a truly gifted and technically precise performer and the generations of musicians that he influenced will be felt and heard for many years to come.
Also, Jay highly recommends you check out Mdou Moctar playing live in Niger on YouTuhe when you get a chance.
