#107 - Tom T. Hall, Trout Mask Replica (cont.), Daptone Records

We learned the news of Charlie Watts passing the day after this was recorded. He was a legend of a drummer and his influence will be heard for generations to come. Rest in Power Charlie Watts.

Jay brings us the news that Tom T. Hall, country music’s “Storyteller”, died at his home in Tennessee last week at the age of 85. His career as a songwriter began in the 1960’s, but his songs, which told rich and complex stories in 3 minutes or less, live on to this day. He will truly be missed. Thank you for the stories Mr. Hall!

Nick decided it’d be better to get this over with while the iron’s hot, so the guys continue their in-depth discussion of Trout Mask Replica. We dig a little deeper into how it was made, why it’s considered a masterpiece, who it’s influenced and whether the band deserves more credit than Captain Beefheart for its place in music history.

If you haven’t heard of Daptone Records or the recordings they’ve released in the 20 years since its founding, this is your lucky day! Greg was reading an excerpt of an upcoming book in Rolling Stone about Charles Bradley & Daptone Records (Rolling Stone) & decided it was time to share with us a label that is near and dear to his heart. “It Ain’t Retro: Daptone Records and the 21st-Century Soul Revolution” is available now and tells how artists like Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley, Antibalas, Menahan Street Band have helped bring about a modernized soul and funk revival. The music is incredible, seriously though, you should check it out!
