#101 - Summer of Soul, Lennon on Rock Lobster, Bangers & Mashups Part 3

Jay was absolutely blown away by the documentary “Summer of Soul”, now available on Hulu. Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson’s directorial features clips from the little known Harlem Cultural Festival that occurred over six weeks during the summer of ’69 in Harlem. Given Jay’s glowing review & the musicians featured in the film, we strongly recommend anyone remotely interested give this film a solid watch!

Songs:

  • Stevie Wonder - It’s Your Thing

  • Gladys Knight & The Pips - Heard It Through The Grapevine

In 1979, John Lennon was at a NYC Disco when he heard the B-52’s “Rock Lobster” & decided that the music he & Yoko had made from 69-74 was ready for a bigger audience. He & Yoko hit the studio and recorded “Double Fantasy”. It was hours after signing a copy of said album that Lennon’s assassin shot him in the back in front his apartment building. It’s a moment in music history and Nick thought it was a good story to dig into for an otherwise quiet week. [Ultimate Classic Rock]

Song: Nate Smith - Square Wheel

Greg is back with Round 3 of “Bangers & Mashups”! This week, a rarity, where the sum of the parts nearly exceed the originals as Brittany sits in with the Deftones. Next we hear Bill Withers collaborate with Pantera and we also get DJ Cumberbund’s BlitzMMMBop. We hope you enjoy!
